Some things that look disgusting to us are considered delicacies in some parts of the world. Let's find out how weird some national dishes can be.
#1 Escamol, Mexico
In Mexico, these edible larvae and pupae of ants are considered a delicacy. They are sometimes called "insect caviar" and consumed since the age of Aztecs.
#2 Hákarl, Iceland
Hákarl is also known as fermented shark. It's made from the meat of the Greenland shark, which is poisonous when fresh, so it needs to be processed. First of all, the beheaded shark is placed in sand and gravel and pressed with large stones – this removes the extra fluids from the body. After 6-12 weeks, the meat is cut into strips and hung to dry for 4-5 months. When the shark is ready, the developed dark crust is removed, and the insides are cut into pieces and served:
#3 Fugu, Japan
Fugu is the most dangerous delicacy in the world – if not prepared properly, the meat of this fish can kill. A licensed chef should carefully remove all the "bad" parts, not contaminating the edible meat. Getting a license involves from 2- to 3-year apprenticeship. In Japan, the fishing and preparation of fugu is strictly controlled by law.
#4 Edible bird's nest soup, China
Asian birds Swiftlets build their nest using solidified saliva, and they are used in Chinese cooking for more than 4 centuries. The most popular dish is the bird's nest soup. It's believed to have many health benefits.
#5 Drunken shrimp, China
Another strange dish from China is made from live freshwater shrimp. Since it may not be very convenient to consume your food alive, the shrimp are usually immersed in liquor – somehow it's supposed to make the process of eating easier.
#6 Escargot, France
To prepare this French delicacy, also popular in some parts of Portugal and Spain, some species of land snails are used. They are removed from their shells, cooked, and then put back with the special sauce.
#7 Casu marzu, Sardinia
This cheese is created by fermentation and contains live maggots. The cheese in which the maggots have died is considered unsafe to eat by the Sardinians.
#8 Khash, Armenia
This soup is very popular in Armenia and is thought to have amazing health-restoring qualities. It is made from cow’s feet and has a very strong smell of it. The soup is cooked on the stove for several hours, which makes the broth very gelatinous and thick.
#9 Rocky Mountain oysters, Canada
This may sound absolutely nonthreatening, until you find out that these oysters are actually made of bull testicles. Anyway, this deep-fried dish is reported to be a very tasty appetizer.
#10 San-nakji, Korea
This dish is made from long arm octopus, which tentacles are moving even after the death of an animal. The thing is that this octopus has a very complex nervous system, and its arms can move even after death, as they contain two-third of the neurons of the whole body. Sometimes san-nakji is just a whole live octopus served with oil and sesame.
